Footfall over the years

Average people counted per camera per day, month by month. The pandemic emptied the city centre in 2020 — this shows how far it has come back since.

The rhythm of the day

Average footfall at a typical camera by hour, across all the data. Leeds fills up through the morning to a lunchtime peak, then empties in the evening.

Which days are busiest?

Average footfall per camera by day of the week. Saturday is the big shopping day; Sunday is the quietest.

The busiest streets

Share of recent footfall by camera location. Briggate, the main pedestrianised shopping street, dominates.

Eight cameras count people walking past fixed points in the city centre, hour by hour. The published files overlap heavily and have changed format several times since 2008, and the cameras have been renamed and occasionally relocated; we merge everything and de-duplicate each hour, keeping the council's later, revised (higher) figures where they conflict. Because the number of working cameras varies, we show the average count per camera per day rather than raw totals. Treat it as a good indicator of the trend, not a turnstile-exact count.
